A Treasured Gift

Books to my girls are always a special gift. They all love to read and be read to. There Easter baskets had new books, and their grandparents gave them new books for Easter, too. Everyone is going to have their noses stuck in a book over the next few weeks.

Last week, I was able to have some really special time with books with my two younger daughters. Tommy Nelson sent me an amazing package that I was able to share with my girls.

The first gift went to my little one.

Her first Bible that isn’t full of pictures. The beautiful Velveteen Bible really is a treasure to this little girl. When we sit down to do our family devotions now, she has a big girl Bible, too. Even though she still can’t read, she is excited to join us during this special time with her new Bible.

This hardcover Bible came in a beautiful case that is frocked with fur on the Bunny. When you open the case the Bible fits nicely inside with the same touch and feel bunny. This Bible is the complete New King James Version of text. We typically do our Bible reading as a family in NIV Bibles, but do turn to other translations and versions when we want to look closer at certain scriptures.

This Bible would make a wonderful Baptism gift.

Here is more description of this Bible from Tommy Nelson:

A sweet addition to the Tommy Nelson Baby/Toddler Bible line, using an adorable image of a flocked velvet bunny.

Inspired by Baby’s First Bible with the adorable fuzzy duck cover, this new offering for little ones, The Velveteen Bible features soft fur and a fuzzy tail!  Inside, the New King James Version scripture is accompanied by whimsical images of bunnies and other baby animals, colorful borders, and lovely sentiments from the scriptures.  The Bible is packaged in a keepsake treasure box.

The second gift was given to my middle daughter. It was the Sequin Bible. The shiny cover and bling was instantly appealing to this little girl. During our Bible reading time, she uses either The Adventure Bible or her Hands On Bible, so she is excited to have a Bible that she feels is a little more grown up for her. It is still written in the International Children’s Bible translation so it will be easier for her to understand.

She is excited to take this Bible with her to Bible Camp this summer.

Here is a little more about this Bible from Tommy Nelson:

A fun sparkly and shiny Bible for little girls embellished with sequins…Cute to carry and easy to read!

A full sized Bible in the International Children’s Bible® translation, the Bible kids can read and understand! This adorable Bible is bound in floral fabric and embellished with shiny sparkly sequins! The cover will invite other little girls to ask “what kind of Bible is that?” and the owner can show her sparkly shiny Bible, thus sharing the “light” of Jesus. Inside, the Bible will have four sweet full color presentation pages in the front, a dictionary/concordance in the back, and the full texts of the Old and New Testaments.

Now your little girl can enjoy having a fun sparkly Bible to take to church and Sunday School.

I don’t think there is a more treasured gift than a new Bible. We are looking forward to diving in and studying God’s word together.

Do your children have a favorite Bible that they treasure?

Prayer Books for Kids

I am over at the MOD Squad Blog today talking about PRIORITY Parenting. Today is the first post focusing on the letter “P”. “P” is for Prayer.

The girls and I worked on prayer books to help them learn how to pray and what to pray about.

Head over to the MOD Squad for the printable pages of this children’s prayer book.

Celebrating Seuss

Last year we celebrated Read Across America Day all week. We decided to really celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday in style. This year we are just going to have a little fun on the actual day Wednesday. I am still trying to figure out exactly how we are going to party for his birthday this year.

While I am making plans I thought I would share the activities that we did last year.

On Monday we made reading bags. We still use these bags to take books to and from the library.

On Tuesday we read There’s a Wocket in My Pocket! and the girls created their own Seuss Characters.

On Wednesday we focused on writing. The girls created their own journals to record their story ideas and start writing their own stories.

On Thursday we had a Poetry Party. It was all about the words that rhyme. The girls wrote their own shape poems and we rhyming poems.

We finished the week talking about different types of illustrations. Water color, paint, charcoal and even pencil. We looked at all kinds of examples. There are some really amazing picture books that you can get to show your kids the many forms of illustrations.

And it wouldn’t be Seuss’ Birthday without a visit from Thing 1 and Thing 2. . .

I used Cotton Candy for Thing 1 and Thing 2, but today I saw a great idea from Shaina at the Family Kitchen just using frosting. She has more great ideas for Celebrating Seuss, too.

Will you take time on Wednesday to read to your kids?

Valentine’s Boxes

I know that most moms dread making Valentine’s boxes for their kids to take to school. I actually love it. Every year we try to figure out something fun and different. I was going to try to get these posted before the day, but we were finishing them up last minute. So here are some ideas for next year.

Madi’s Love Bug

We simply used a shoe box. I drew the Bug and we traced it with black marker before we cut it out. Added some black construction paper wheels and hearts.

We just used the extra yellow tag board for the top and added some bumpers and a key hole. Then we cut out the slot for the valentines.

Taylor wanted to top her Love Boat from last year. I told her that we had to do something a little smaller this year.

Taylor’s Candy Machine

We used wrapping paper, heart foam shapes, aluminum foil and tape. It turned out super cute.

They would have liked to make homemade valentines, too. . . maybe next year. :-)

Precious Moments Storybook Bible

The very first Bible I received was a Precious Moments Bible from my Godparents. I was excited for the opportunity to get a Precious Moments Storybook Bible for a younger child to review from Tommy Nelson.

It has a beautiful padded cover with the classic Precious Moments illustrations.

The girls and I had just been discussing friendship so we turned to Friends and Family Give Strength Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 and read about being there for each other.

Another favorite part of the book is the Songs and Prayers section in the back of the book. We had to sing all of the songs: The B-I-B-L-E, Jesus Loves the Little Children, Jesus Loves Me, and Amazing Grace.

Some of the prayers were new and some were ones that we say as a family. The girls loved reading them all.

This book is filled with beautiful illustrations and wonderfully written Bible Stories.

You can also find Precious Moments Coloring pages from Tommy Nelson.

You can purchase the Precious Moments Storybook Bible on Amazon.

This is a great gift idea for a toddler’s first Storybook Bible. Even before they are ready for the stories, they will love the pictures.

Friend Fights

I am posting over at the MOD Squad today. Friendships of girls can be tough. Let’s face it, girls can be mean. How do we teach our girls to be kind? I am teaching my girls how blessed they are to have each other. It might be hard for them to imagine now, but someday they will be best friends.

So, how do we help them get through friend fights and not get involved? You can read more about it here.

Really Woolly Bible Stories

As we made our way through the Old Testament during our Jesse Tree devotions we read many Bible Stories to the girls. Some they are very familiar with and some are new. It was fun to see what they had learned at Sunday School and to listen to their questions.

I like to find the stories in our Children’s Bibles so that we can read them to Nadia, too. She is not quite old enough to sit through all of the stories while we are reading from our Bibles with no pictures.

In her stocking this year she had a Really Woolly Lamb right on top. It is her new favorite thing to sleep with. When the mail came a few weeks ago and I pulled out the new Really Woolly Bible Stories book she was really excited.

A few nights ago she decided that her daddy needed to start to read to her. I thought they might read a couple of stories each night. They loved it so much, they read through the entire book in one sitting.

Take a look at the inside of the book here. The illustrations are fun and the stories are just the right length. Thank you Tommy Nelson for the opportunity to review Really Woolly Bible Stories. It is a great addition to our family Bible Library.

What are you favorite Bible Stories to tell you kids? Do they have a story that you tell over and over again? How do you take the stories of Old and make them come alive for your kids?

Countdown to Christmas with Books

Today Nadia and I found all of our Christmas books and we wrapped them up for our Countdown to Christmas in books. Each year we wrap up 24 books to open as we countdown to Christmas. We wrapped up 25 packages so that we could start on November 30th.

I found my leftover Christmas wrapping paper for this project. I love getting new wrapping paper every year so this is a great way to use up what you have left from previous years. My mom had some Christmas books that we have not read so I added them to our stack this year. First we laid out all of the books so we could count them.

We ended up having way more than 25 so we put a few together for an extra treat on some nights. My older girls will read the books to us on the night they open their presents. Little one will choose who she wants to read on her night.

When the books are gone we know that Christmas is here.

Art Party

Tuesday afternoon our home turned into an art studio for seven girls. I love having a house full of giggles from girls. Two days later and I still have paint on my floor and art projects here and there and everywhere in my house. A marker on this table, and glue on the counter, but it is worth the mess.

The invitation read:

Crayons, Paint and Markers Galore!

A very Artsy Celebration

we have in store!

Bring your creative spirit

and help us celebrate. . .

Madelyn Thue

is turning 8!

The girls painted picture frames and star plastic containers. They drew their self-portrait and sculpted salt dough. My oldest daughter made balloon animals. It was an afternoon full of making and creating. The girls went home with smiles on their faces and hopefully no paint on their shirts.

How To Make Pop Up Books

We were sent a Creativity for Kids Pop Up Books kit from Growing Tree Toys to review. My girls were really excited when they saw the kit.

Unfortunately it only came with two books so we had to compromise on who got to make the actual books. Luckily in the end the all contributed to one of the books and it turned out great.

The kit came with everything the girls needed to make the books. We added a few scrapbook papers and used Crayola markers to finish our books, but you would not have to purchase anything extra. We just used supplies we had on hand.

Nadia started to work on the first book. She titled it The Brilliant Princess Nadia. In the end she did let her sisters help her complete her book.

Taylor snatched up the second bigger book and is working on a Christmas present with it. She said it is for her dad and myself so she wouldn’t let me take any pictures.

Overall the kit was well put together. The girls enjoyed using their imaginations and creativity. We did use wider tip markers for some of the coloring because the kit comes with fine tip.

Thanks Growing Tree Toys for letting us write and illustrate our own stories!
