Jesse Tree

Each year we take some time in December to journey through the Old Testament with the Jesse Tree. This year I made new ornaments for the tree. We began two days ago with the introduction and have already been through Creation and Adam and Eve.

Each night we are each picking out a verse from the passage of scripture we are studying to add to our scripture journals. It is fun for us to see what verses are chosen and if any of us choose the same one.

To keep the little one interested I have added a little poetry to the stories that I read after we do our Bible Study. Hopefully by next year I can have it organized in an e-book for your enjoyment, too. Usually Nadia climbs up onto someone’s lap and listens until it is time to hang the ornament on the tree.

We are taking turns hanging the ornaments each night leading up to Christmas. This is a great opportunity for families to dig into the Old Testament stories. Most of the stories we all know, Noah, Isaac, Joseph, but it also adds in stories from Hezekiah and Habakkuk.

I have found that most of these stories are in a children’s Bible if your kids are too young to read. You can also print off coloring pages online for each story. I had to do some searching when we did this in the past, but most of the stories are easy to find.

When we do our Bible Study time our oldest uses an NIV, but our middle daughter uses her Adventure Bible. She is still easily able to follow along as we read. We all take turns reading, even our 8 year old. Some words are hard, but she tries to sound out each one. It has been a great reading tool.

Tomorrow we will add a rainbow to our tree with the story of Noah.

Fall Photo Shoot

All the girls were dressed in brown and I still had my sister’s Nikon so I decided to take a few fall pictures of the girls. They were already a little wound up and starting to get hungry, so I knew I didn’t have much time to shoot.

They started out all smiles. . .

Then the little ones started to get a little silly. . .

So we changed scenery a bit. . .

That worked for one picture. . .

Now they got even more silly. . .

One last attempt to get each of them alone. . .

We have a real family photo shoot on Saturday. It could be an interesting day.

Family Scrapbook: Halloween

I wanted to share a few pictures from our Halloween fun. The girls started the afternoon carving pumpkins with their Daddy. No one really liked the pumpkin guts.

This year we had a Monarch Butterfly, a Sock Hop Girl and a Bumblebee. Next year Nadia said the whole family is going to be in wings, even daddy. Wouldn’t that be a hoot.

Happy Halloween!

Apples to Apples Disney Edition

We are a board game playing family. We are always on the lookout for new games. We gave Madelyn one of her birthday gifts early so we could have a family game night. The newest game in our house is Apples to Apples Disney Edition.

We made everyone get ready for bed before we settled in for a game. The game was full of laughter.

Nadia even played this game with us. She was on her mommy’s team.

Daddy had to put aside his analytical brain and just have fun.

Taylor won the first round.

Apples to Apples Disney Edition was a great family game. It was fun for the girls to have the cards based on the Disney Characters and the attractions they saw at Disney in May.

Preparing for Cold and Flu Season

I recently headed to Wal-mart to prepare our family for flu season. Collective Bias told me about a Pedialyte Singles product. Instead of buying the Liter bottle that often gets thrown out when it doesn’t get used, now you can purchase juice box sized 4 packs.

I thought that I was planning ahead, but last night my oldest daughter had a high fever and started to feel sick. She had pneumonia last December so we are extra careful about keeping her hydrated.

I put one of the juice boxes in our fridge to chill it for her to drink a little later when she wakes up. They recommend storing them in a cool place for future use.

The best part is they have an expiration date of March 2012. These will last through this flu season and the next if we don’t use them.

They are also clear so you don’t have to worry about stains from dyes. The 4-packs are available in Apple, Cherry, and Fruit flavors. My Wal-mart only had the fruit flavor on display so far.

Right now you can print off a $1.50 off coupon on the Pedialyte site. I purchase my 4 pack for $5.24 at Wal-mart. I wish I would have printed off the coupon.

Pedialyte also comes in freezer pops and powder packs.

I was compensated by Collective Bias to shop for the new Pedialyte Singles. However, all the opinions in this post are my own.

Football FANatics

Fall in our house = Football.

Yes, we are a family made up of 4 girls to 1 boy, but football is still part of the family. The girls know their daddy was a football player and that he loves the game. They have already inherited his love for all things Steelers, too.

So Sunday afternoon rolled around and daddy decided what everyone in the family would wear for the game. The girls don’t actually sit for much of the game, but they make their daddy proud with their gear.

Unfortunately this week, the Steelers didn’t come out on top, but we still had an afternoon of fun.

When Mama Cat is Away the Mice Will Play

Tonight, my husband is loading up the camper and the kids and going on a little adventure. . .without me. As the mom that does all of the planning and organizing of our family camping outings, I am a little nervous.

I know that my husband is more than capable to get everything ready, and I know that they will have a great time. But I sit here and make a lists in my mind of everything that he might forget. I am kicking myself for not getting anything ready before I left town.

I can’t wait to share with you all about their adventure. In my mind, this is how I think it will go:

  • They will eat pancakes/waffles, hot dogs and hamburgers for every meal.
  • They might wear the same clothes the whole weekend.
  • They will probably forget their toothbrushes.
  • They will have so much fun with their daddy that they will send me away again so they can go on another Daddy/Daughter Camping trip.

Do your kids have special things they do with their daddy? Is it hard for you to let them go without you?

Family Finance Friday: Kids Savings Accounts

I actually got Chad to sit down at the computer tonight and write his very first blog post. He is sharing on a topic that I cannot. I see the word frugal and it inspires me, but then I see something that I really love and I forget what the word frugal means. . .

I have been told before that a child’s values, ethics, morals, mannerisms, behaviors, etc are mostly established between the ages of 3 and 7 years old.  I have no facts to back that up but believe a lot of it to be true.  One of the behaviors Amy and I talked about trying to establish with our children was the behavior of saving money.

Yes, I heard some of you just laugh about that since you know Amy missed that lesson as a child to save money.  I know it is a strange concept in America but the recent economy has spurred up some savings by many of the American people lately.

We have savings accounts for the girls that we put money into each month but decided to open another savings account for each of them that I nicknamed their “slush” accounts.  Our intent was to teach them the behavior of saving and to be excited about going to the bank to deposit their birthday or Christmas cash, etc.  We hadn’t even talked to them about the fact that they could spend it and I don’t think it ever crossed their minds either.

Two years past and they had been begging us for Ipods.  I was appalled at them spending that kind of money for them but could see the benefits of them to keep them busy in the car on long trips, the airplane and airports during family vacations.  We were about to go to Disney World so it was good timing to purchase them.

The plan they agreed to was that they would pay for half of the Ipod themselves and we would pay for the other half.  We all agreed it was a great plan and the Ipods were purchased.  We arrived home after the purchase and I sat down at the computer for what I thought would be a great “teaching” moment for the girls to show them how I was going to transfer their half of the purchase out of their savings account to make it real for them.

Little did I know that Madelyn would burst into tears and ask why I was doing that and how she was not going to have hardly any money left in her account.  I felt like a firefighter trying to put out a towering inferno of tears.  Once I gathered myself, I asked her if she knew what a savings account was meant for and she did not respond.  I explained to her that her mom and I have savings accounts as well that we put money into so we can use it for special occasions like family vacations to Disney World or just to stay in a hotel somewhere together as a family for a weekend get away.

The light started to turn on and I could almost see the wheels turning in her head as she began to calm down and did eventually realize that she was putting her money toward a “special” purchase such as this Ipod just like her Mom and Dad saved for “special” purchases or occasions.  It did turn out to be a great teaching moment but I was just not prepared for the initial fury of tears.

Do your children have a savings account? What are some of the special things that they are saving for?

Family Friendly Flicks: Letters To God

Our kids love family movie nights. In fact, our middle daughter wrote on her getting to know you poster at school, “I hope my family can start having family movie nights again”. (It has kind of been crazy around here and we still haven’t even hooked up the DVD player since the move).

Family movie nights are a great opportunity to spend quality time together as a family. I realize that you are not doing a lot of communicating during the movie, but movies can give you great conversation starters for after it is over.

Recently on a family camping trip a rain storm came through so we took the opportunity to watch a movie together. On this occasion we watched Letters to God.

Letters to God was inspired by co-writer Patrick Doughtie’s own son’s battle with cancer. In the movie, eight year old Tyler Doherty faces his cancer battle daily with courage and bravery. His letters to God are his prayers that he places in his mailbox daily. These letters are picked up by a postman suffering from alcohol addiction and a failed marriage.

Tyler touches not only the postman, but everyone he comes into contact with in the movie. Tyler’s gives hope to those who have lost their hope. He inspires many others to write their own letters to God.

This movie touched our entire family. I highly recommend that you watch it with your family. After the movie was over and we had all wiped away our tears it gave us a great opportunity to talk to our kids about heaven and their relationship with Christ.

If you are looking for a great activity for your family this weekend, host a family movie night. It is always fun to pop popcorn and buy some Movie Theatre snacks. Gather around the TV and spend some great time together as a family.
