School Days

Today is the last day of summer vacation for my girls. Tomorrow we will wake up to a house with a 5th grader, a 3rd grader and a my littlest headed to Kindergarten. And, as if that is not hard enough. . .after 5 years of being a stay-at-home mom, I am headed back to work.

So many changes, so much excitement, so many blessings. It will be so strange to see my little buddy for the past 5 years at school walking through the hallways with her new little friends.

She is growing up. . .

And these girls are, too. . .

Today I am continue to count my blessings. . .

The End of Summer

I have been trying to soak up every moment of summer vacation with my girls.

The very last summer before all three girls are in school full-time. It has been wonderful, it has gone fast. I haven’t spent much time on the computer, I didn’t want to have any regrets when school is back in session.

I have hardly wrote a word all summer. It is so wonderful to sit back down at the computer and put the words down on the screen.

Today I am back sharing at The Mod Squad Blog. I would love for you to join me there today.

Summer Fun

Summer is here in full swing. In between running kids to gymnastics and softball we are busy with sleepovers, summer reading and exploring. I am going to try to post a little along the way, but I am enjoying my girls before they head back to school. My little one is off to Kindergarten this year. Here are a few pictures of our fun.

{Top Ten} things I have learned on this vacation

We are spending our last full day in the Florida Keys. It has been a wonderful vacation for my hubby and I. I decided to share a few things I learned on this trip.

10. You can never wear enough sunscreen when you are coming from a long winter in South Dakota.

9. Always ask the locals where you should eat. We had the best meal of our trip based on a suggestion from our Snorkel Captain.

8. GPS works way better than my personal navigation skills in rush hour traffic in Miami.

7. Miami Beach has beautiful sand and water, but not exactly family friendly.

6. We are not quite ready for a vacation that involves this much relaxation. (We really enjoy hiking, sight seeing, etc.)

5. I have a love/hate relationship with snorkeling. I love to see what is under the water, but I can never get back on the boat fast enough. (especially when their is a barracuda hanging out right next to the stairs that I needed to use to get back into the boat)

4. Next time we go on vacation we need to pack our beach towels first. (we forget our beach towels on every trip and bring home new ones as souvenirs)

3. I love Florida in May.

2. Bring a good book when the NBA playoffs are on TV.

1. Five nights away from home with my hubby is about perfect, then I am ready to get home to my girls.

I Do

Eleven years ago today I said “I Do”. It has been a journey. It has been an adventure. It has been the best eleven years of my life.

We had a short engagement. We still had a lot to learn about each other when the honeymoon was over and we were life partners. Every moment has not been easy, but every moment has been worth it.

We have climbed mountains together. . .

We have tipped over canoes in the ocean together (and frantically flipped them back over and jumped back in)…

We have had a lot of fun together…

We have built a family on hope, love, faith and big dreams…

We have lived in four different towns and had five different addresses. Everywhere we have been has formed and shaped us into who we are today. We have seen God at work so many times throughout our lives together.

What an adventure it has been.

Happy Anniversary Chad! I love You!

It’s Time to Party!

Ultimate Blog Party 2011

I really love to entertain. I love a good party.

I would love to invite you all over for nice strong cup of coffee and a sweet treat, but since we still have plenty of snow on the ground (it even tried to snow a little today), I am pretty sure none of you would want to come for a visit.

Every year 5 Minutes for Mom hosts a spectacular blog party! We spend an entire week finding awesome new blogs to add to our readers. If you are visiting from UBP ’11, WELCOME to Girlfriends Get Real! If you are a blogger and you haven’t joined in the fun, check it out here.

Since some of you might be new here I thought I would share a little bit about me.

  • I love to write/blog but I need sleep and love to spend time with my family more, so I write when I can, but have learned when I need to shut the computer off and enjoy life.

  • I love to cook and bake. Especially in my mom and dad’s kitchen. You will often see the orange countertop in my food pics. That means I am at their house, making a mess it their kitchen. So many memories of baking and cooking in this kitchen since I was the little girl on the chair helping my own grandmother. Now it is my own kids making the exact same memories.

  • I moved back to my hometown nine months ago with my family. We live in a great neighborhood, in a great house. It will be an amazing house when I finally get the energy up to scrape off a little wallpaper and do a little painting.
  • I love to read, my kids love to read. We could open a library in our house. I can’t think of anything that I love spending money on more than books.
  • I am a mother of girls. I live a life full of drama. I love every minute of it. I write about these three little girls here and over at the MOD Squad. If you are a mom of girls you should check it out.

  • I am blessed to be celebrating my 11th Anniversary on April 8th. The last day of this wonderful blog party. All I can say is I Love this Man!

  • Most importantly, I am a follower of Christ. All of this post is about me, but really I want my life to be all about Him. In the end, He is all that matters.

Thanks for stopping by! Leave a comment so I can visit you, too.

Family Chore Chart

I am really trying to get this house organized this year, but realized very quickly that I cannot do it alone. It is going to take the help of everyone in the family to get it accomplished.

The first step was a Family Chore Chart.

I knew that the chart needed to be in a place that we were reminded of our tasks often. I am using our back door that we use every time we come and go from the house. I also decided to include my husband and I on the chart.

First decide which chores you need to create magnets for. Here is the list for our family:

Taylor and Madelyn (they are 10 & 8):

Daily Tasks

  • Set the Table (every other day)
  • Brush Hair & Teeth
  • Clean My Room
  • Make My Bed
  • Put Away Backpacks, Coats & Winter Gear
  • Practice Piano

When Needed Tasks

  • Clean the Basement
  • Put Away Clean Clothes

Nadia (5):

Daily Tasks

  • Pick Out Clothes for Tomorrow
  • Get Dressed (we have a hard time getting out the door most days. She would like to stay in her PJs)
  • Brush Hair & Teeth
  • Clean My Room
  • Make My Bed
  • Put Away the Toys I played with Today
  • Put Away Backpacks, Coats & Winter Gear

Dad:

  • Take out the Garbage/Recycling
  • Shovel Snow
  • Mow the Lawn
  • Laundry (Yes, Dad does most of the laundry in our house)

Mom:

  • Kitchen
  • Office
  • Bathrooms
  • Bedroom
  • Living Room

I also made a list of each room and the tasks that need to be done in those rooms. They are covered in Contact Paper so that I can use a dry erase marker on them and check things off as I go. Then, erase them and start over the next week.

As we finish our tasks we move them to Done.

I just used my computer to make all of my chore magnets. Cut them out, covered them with contact paper and add a magnet. I used supplies I had at home. I actually cut up magnets that I already had and glued them to the back of my chore tabs.

After I had the chore chart created, I knew that I needed to add an incentive to get the chores accomplished. My girls are motivated by money so I knew that would need to be incorporated. However, I also wanted it to be a family affair so I didn’t just decide to give them an allowance each week.

I created a Mission Accomplished Jar out of a Peanut Butter Jar.

Everyday they can earn a quarter when they complete their chores. By the end of the week, if everyone does their chores we should have about $8.25. By the end of the month we will have about $35.00 in our Mission Accomplished Jar.

I also created a Family Adventures Jar.

This jar is full of ideas that we can use to spend our $35.00 as a family.

There are a few ideas that don’t cost anything (family movie & game nights) and their are a few ideas that will cost more than $35.00 (out of town overnight at a motel). So they can decide if they want to save it or spend it. This is helping to teach them how much it costs to do fun activities as a family).

I knew that one quarter a day wouldn’t be enough to keep them motivated so I added an additional twist. Each week if they have completed their tasks we will give them $5.00. They can either put this money in their bank account or spend it. We are going to have them use this money when they want to go to the movies with friends, buy treats at the concession stands at ball games, etc.

It is working so far. The girls are really excited to start earning some money and I am excited to have some help around the house. I will have to give you a future update on any changes I need to make.

Do you have a chore chart? How does your chart work?
